I know why Islam broke in two (succession of the Prophet Mohammad. The Sunnis wanted Abu Bakr, who was elected, to be his successor, but the Shias wanted someone from within the Prophet's family) but I don't understand what was so important about this succession that Islam had to break in half.

Also, a unrelated question, but is it true that Shias sometimes keep swords in their homes to remember the beheading of one of their martyrs?
