Recently, I've seen an uptick in comments on this sub (and a couple others) where the (rightly justified) anger at the Indian government's actions have extended to Indian Muslims. I suppose I could spend the time to quote individual comments but its not really worth my time.
Anyways:
Claim 1 - Indian Muslims are complicit in the Indian government's actions. Indian Muslims have never supported the BJP (India's right-wing extremist party which is currently in power and led by Modi). Somehow a nationalist-Pakistani narrative gets pushed here that every Indian loves Modi. We have more a reason to hate the Indian government than you do. Look up some of the Muslims in government who openly challenge Modi and call out his tyranny on the parliament floors (e.g. Asad Owaisi from Hyderabad)
Claim 2 - Indian Muslims are being slaughtered in streets everywhere they go! This is also wildly exaggerated. YES, in Kashmir... but this is way more complex than "oh they're Muslims, lets kill them!". It has to do with the geopolitics of highly desirable land that is situated at the border with Pakistan.
As a historical example, Hyderabad State used to be a wealthy and resource-rich independent state in south-central India. It was invaded by the Indian government in 1949-50 and yes, many Muslims were killed and the Islamic government overthrown. That was a geopolitical reality; but since then, Indian Muslims aren't continually killed in Hyderabad just for being Muslim, because India's geopolitical goals were already met.
None of this is meant to lessen whats going on in Kashmir. Its to point out that using a narrative of "its all because they are Muslim and therefore every Indian Muslim is being brutally murdered!!" is overblown.
Are anti-Muslim attacks on the rise because of Modi? Yes, absolutely. But there are other Muslim-majority areas where Muslims are not attacked, no matter how much beef we eat. Still, I admit that overall things are getting worse because of Modi.
Claim 3 - All Hindus are bloodthirsty for Muslims. Again, a wrong and unjust narrative. There is definitely a section of them who are. Yes. But to paint things black-and-white to feed some political agenda is stupid. Despite our cultures, religions, and oftentimes languages being different, many Hindus live in harmony with Muslims. They attend our weddings, our holidays, etc. and invite us to theirs.
Another historical example: when Hyderabad State was conquered, the Nizam (Islamic ruler) gave the waqf of Makkah Masjid (a historic 600 year old mosque) to a Hindu organization. Because he knew that they were honorable people who would uphold its rights while he worried that Muslims might play politics with it.
I'd also point out the case of Mu'tim ibn Adi or Abu Talib to those who claim that every polytheist is blood-thirsty or antagonistic to Muslims.
Claim 4 - The truly most bizarre comment I read on here: Indian Muslims are not true Muslims because they are a part of India/didn't migrate.
This is just a stupid comment that I can't think of any explanation for other than unchecked, unfettered nationalism. There are many reasons why people from many different backgrounds chose not to migrate to Pakistan back in the day. I'm not gonna get into these reasons right now.
In any case, to act like Islam in India died is preposterous. Deoband, Nadwatul Ulema, Aligarh, etc. are still beacons of Islamic knowledge and learning. Mughlai culture is still blatantly apparent whether in Delhi, Lucknow, Hyderabad, or many other historically Muslim cities. The streets of these cities are lined with madrasas, with 35,000 azaans blaring out all the time etc.
I don't understand people pushing a claim that in India, we all walk around bowing down to cows all day. The level of just blatantly wrong comments I have seen in this subreddit alone is frustrating.
tl;dr: Stop lumping Indian Muslims in with the BJP's actions. Stop making blatantly wrong claims about what life is like for Indian Muslims. Above all, pray for Kashmir.
