Assalāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh
One thing many of us have noticed is the disappearance of reminders of death and Allāh ‘azza wajal. These days it’s even seen as embarassing to mention God in casual conversation, it’s taboo to mention Him at work, we chalk things up to “luck” and “mother nature,” etc. We (as in humanity, not just Muslims) forget about Him more than before
But another issue is that we are far less reliant on Him as a species than before. Society has changed to the point where we practice tawakkul far less than in the past. Some examples:
1) When people used to farm, they did all they could and then pray for rain and a good yield. Nowadays, far less people are farmers, and many farmers have irrigation systems, cloud seeding, domes and what not. The tawakkul is disappearing since our asbaab have enumerated. These days we have steady paychecks and just go to the grocery store for our food, done. How many of us lean on Allāh ‘azza wajal to ask we get paid again next Friday? We just take it for granted. Paycheck after paycheck without a hiccup. Meanwhile the farmers used to lean on Allāh ‘azza wajal like nobody today
2) When people used to get sick, often times there were no known medicinces. Just pray and rely on Allāh ‘azza wajal that He cures. Today we just head to walgreens or the doc, pop a pill, and forget about it. He is still the one curing yet we put our faith in the asbaab more than him.
4) The ships in the sea. We dont rely on wind anymore which we have no control over. So the tawakkul there has disappeared as well. Now we have engines and propellors
Yes, tawakkul still exists today, but perhaps only when we are in very desparate situations. We get fired and have no savings, contract a fatal sickness, the engines fail and we pray for another boat to sail by. It’s not nearly as often as it used to be.
I don’t know what effects this has on the heart ans soul, but surely it cant be good. Not only do we have less reminders of Him ti make us greatful, but we practice less tawakkul as well.
