Just an FYI, I am not a Muslim but I was curious about this question - I know that in Christianity, the problem of "salvation" (I don't know the Islamic equivalent) before Jesus' execution has historically always been kind of a problem with people arguing back and forth about whether pre-Christian people went to heaven, with the answer usually decided on as, "maybe, some of them".
I got to thinking about Islam and wondered if there was any similar debate in the community. I assume (and I am totally open to being wrong here, so feel free to correct any misimpressions I have of Islam) that traditional Islam has a more liberal interpretation of who gets into heaven than traditional Christianity due to the fact that Jews and Christians (as far as I know) can get into heaven in Islam as well and it isn't as focused on some sort of personal salvation experience.
So I would assume that pre-Islam, anyone considered a "godly" person would go to heaven? What if they were a virtuous pagan, similar to in Dante's Inferno?
My apologies if this isn't the right place to ask the question, it just came to me and I figured I'd ask it here.
