I am an atheist as well as vegan. I live in a very intolerant Christian community. At work, I am the only atheist, my friend the only Muslim. He is also African American, so there is a lot of friction in our workplace just because of this.
Today, a Christian co worker of ours went out of his way to make fun of the fact that I do not eat meat. At some point my friend stepped in asked him if he knew God himself says that certain animals are unclean for us. The co worker says yes but he knows he will be forgiven so that makes it ok. My friend told him this. “Keep in mind that when Allah himself tells you clear as the day that pork is bad for you, you want to argue with him. But when a human being tells you to be at work at 7, you make sure you’re here at 6:45. You need to be careful who you serve.”
And even as an atheist, this hit deep. A lot of times we know what’s best for us, we know what’s right and wrong. And we do what we were going to do anyways. And then sometimes we will change who we are, our daily routine or all around behavior to conform to another human beings preferences before we do what we should be doing for ourselves first.
Anyways, just wanted to share. Have a good day!
