Note: BEFORE ANYONE GOES BANANAS ON ME IN THE COMMENT SECTION, I am not posting this for the sake of debating, I am posting this for an explanation and/or for a satisfying conclusion. Plus I really want this off my chest so here we go...
Full English translation of the farewell sermon.
First issue:
Translation: And treat the women kindly, since they are your "awan"(عوان) and are not in a position to manage their affairs themselves.
So I looked up the Arabic definitions of the word in this link (online Arabic dictionary) and the results for the alternative meanings were:
حبيس (confined)
أخيذ(Take care)
أسير(prisnor/captive)
زاهد(ascetic)
سبي (war captive)
Plus when we came across this part in our curriculum, our teacher insistently used the third term above.
First, Okay, I get it. I know the context, but that comment is still VERY DISAPPOINTING.
While many Muslims in the past few years have done countless efforts to disprove anti-Islam propaganda, including the idea that women are "slaves" here the prophet (saws) in one sentence CONFIRMING THEIR POINT.
Note: to be fair, the root "a-wa-na" does mean "help" making "awan" mean helpers/aiders, yet our (arabic) teacher insisted on the third term, and unfortunately given the comment after it the third term fits the most.
Secondly,
"لا يملكن لأنفسهن شيئا"
"and are not in a position to manage their affairs themselves."
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_female_Nobel_laureates
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_elected_and_appointed_female_heads_of_state_and_government
I DON'T NEED TO mention examples of "women managing their affairs themselves", for reality already has many examples, contrary to his "absolute" words.
And those examples are, of course, in most countries outside of Africa and the Middle East (because ISLAM'S RESTRICTIVE NATURE is what put women in that position in the first place)
Which means no Islam/anything that brings upon this mentality=false statement.
Plus as an arabic speaker, from my understanding of the arabic sentence above, I wouldn't translate it as "and are not in a position to manage their affairs themselves."
I'd translate it (to my understanding) as "they have nothing for themselves" which is worse.
But men apparently do???
This is some fine r/gatekeeping the way I see it...
Second issue :
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."😳😳😳
Quran 39:53
Oh wait...
من ادعى إلى غير أبيه ، ومن تولى غير مواليه ، فعليه لعنة الله والملائكة والناس أجمعين ، ولا يقبل الله منه صرفاً ولا عدلاً.
“He who attributes his ancestry to other than his father or claims his clientship to other than his master, the curse of Allah is upon him." (Also from the sermon)
Of course there's a contradicting hadith! Why did I get my hopes high...
Yet in Arabic, it actually CONTINUES "The curse of Allah, and the angels, and all people is upon him, and Allah will not accept from him sarf or adl."
I can't find the exact translations of those two words for the context, but our teacher said it meant that their testimony is unlawful, and that they cannot be forgiven (neither in dunya or hereafter)
Oh so according to the verse above, 1-you kill 99 people, steal, 2-shirk ,3- apostasy unlawful intercourse, but as long as you're still breathing and do sincere and don't return, you're forgiven right?
1(a story a out a man who did so yet was forgiven) 2-(converts) 3("ex-ex-Muslims")
And yet, it was so important to mention that something as small (in comparison) such as changing ancestry and being loyal to a different leader would be unforgivable???
Bonus:
- Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with them) reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be, upon him) ordered the killing of dogs except the dog tamed for hunting, or watching of the herd of sheep or other domestic animals. It was said to Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with them) that Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) talks of (exception) about the dog for watching the field, whereupon he said: Since Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) possessed land.
Oh so then next time I see a stray or pet(since it doesn't fall under the 3 categories) dog,
n o m e r c y
- I remember reading about a hadith which I can't find (and I hope I never do) where Mohammed (saws) asked both Abu Bakr and Omar about what to do regarding war captives (at the end of a battle)(Badr maybe). So the first two decided to keep them alive and return them for ransom. Omar voted for killing.
After some time, Omar looked for the two to find them weeping under a tree, so he asked what was wrong? Turns out that Allah, the most merciful, had revealed this sacred, holy/absolute verse:
It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah 's enemies] in the land. Some Muslims desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. ~Quran 8:67
I thought Islam prided itself for being "ahead of it's time" including NOT killing war prisoners (or dogs) but of course, contradicting hadiths.
"It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah 's enemies] in the land. "
"I was sent as a mercy for the worlds"
And these don't contradict each other BECAUSE....?
- It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “This nation has been granted mercy (in the Hereafter) and its torment (in this world) is at the hands of one another. When the Day of Resurrection comes, each Muslim man will be given a man from among the idolaters and it will be said: ‘This is your ransom from the Fire.’”
I didn't get this hadith, anyone explain?
