Hey,

Can anyone pass me to a good source or (if qualified) enlightenment me regarding aqiqah?

I've never really thought much about it since reverting to Islam since I had no reason to.. However I'm recently expecting a baby girl. So I naturally started reading up on what I'm expected to do/Sunnah etc..

And I have a couple of issues regarding Aqiqah, mostly revolving around the fact it is 1 animal for a girl 2 animals for a boy.

Most of the reasoning I can find online and in books etc seem to fall to two things:

1) Because Arab men (or men in general) are naturally more excited to have a boy and they some go as far to point out modern day examples in India/China.

2) Because Allah (swt) works in mysterious ways and we don't know his wisdom behind everything.

3) I only found 1 source mention it is only the minimum and you can offer as much as you like for either. So I'm hoping that's true? Any confirmation on that would be great.

Generally from what I've found it suggests that 1 for a girl and 2 for a boy was done because men get more excited for boys and should be able to show their excitement. Now that immediately raises a lot of issues for me:

1) if it is purely excitement why not have both as 1 but you can do 2 if you wish. Why set the minimum for a boy higher?

1b) I just don't like the assumption I'm going to less excited about having a girl. Some men might be... But Why is the Sunnah set to cater to men that are disappointed in having a girl rather than you know... Fathers who are happy to be blessed with a child (I'm not saying you can't be more excited but- if you want to splash cash and have a huge feast just because you didn't have a girl your wrong. (Also, most of these early men it is catering to are probably the same that a couple of years ago were burying their daughters just for being girls).

1c) What about the mother? That explanation is purely on the father's emotions (I'm guessing possibly due to it being the father that does the slaughter?)

2) While there are many things that can be answered by Allah knows best... This I believe isn't one of them, it is Sunnah and there should be a reason Muhammad (pbuh) and his companions did it, even if that reason is because it is in the Qur'an, but I'm pretty sure its not and it is purely hadith? I just want to know why.

3) I'd like to know if I'm fine with doing 2 or more as I really don't like the idea of doing less just because I've had/having a girl.

I also read one that stated girls are actually more priveledge because they require less of a sacrifice to be blessed but that just sounds like an excuse?

I know I'm probably going a bit over the top and I hope I don't offend with the above. I'm just frustrated I can't find an answer when I know there must be one. I'm currently not able to go to a mosque (for answers - minimal English speaking) which doesn't help as that'd be an easy way to get an answer.

Any good videos, links or any brothers/sisters who have wisdom on this please share. I know there will be an explanation and clarity somewhere. Any help in directing me to that would be most grateful :)
