In my adult life, I’ve moved away from donating money for zakat al fitr, and for a couple years, have instead donated food to a local food bank. I thought that I should help my local community rather than give money to a faceless organization. Last Ramadan, I was told that zakat al fitr must go to Muslims, and that donating to a food bank does not fulfill the obligation. Is this true? I live in the US, and not in a Muslim majority area. Can the donation just be to those in need? If you have advice in either direction, could you provide some evidence to help me feel better about my decision? Thank you.
