Since the lunar calendar is 11 days shorter than the solar calendar, doing Ramadan math in my head has been fun. We know that Ramadan begins about 10-11 days sooner each year. Last year it began around May 16th and this year it began today, May 6th. Knowing that, you can roughly forecast some things.

For Ramadan to begin an entire month earlier (eg: begin on April 6th compared to beginning today on May 6th) will take three years (approx. 10 days back per year x 3 to begin 30 days, or one month, sooner).

The next time it will start in early May will be 36 years from now (3 years for it to start one month prior x 12 months/year = 36 years).

Ramadan will begin in Daylight Savings Time in about 6 years from now (DST ends around March 7th which is two months prior to May). We'll experience even shorter days for fasting during that time.

Fasting hours will continue to shrink to their shortest duration possible in mid-December (approx. 13 years from now) when daylight is the least in the year. In the US, iftar in December will happen around 4:55PM, a full three hours sooner compared to around 8:00PM today in May.

Toddlers present today will reach fasting age probably 14 years from now when Ramadan arrives in November. They'll experience longer and longer fasting hours as the years progress and Ramadan begins falling back into the summer months with longer daylight hours.

The longest fasting day is behind us and happened in 2017 ago in mid-June when Ramadan covered 5/26 - 6/24. From here on out, fasting hours are decreasing each year and will continue to do so for about 13 years.
