Why hasn't Islam made this transition? Almost all liberal Muslims I know tend to have been raised in the West (in particular America), practise a heretical often syncretic version of the faith such as Sufism and various blends of Islam and local shamanist or pagan religions in Indonesia, are frequently exposed to American media, or have lots of contact with non-Muslims (part which is why Indian Muslims in New Dehli practise a far more toned down interpretation of Islam than say a Pakistani).

Why is it still controversial to simply include a verse from the Quran in a song that entire video games and movies had to be banned? With riots starting out over disagreements in mosque architecture because it comes off more as Shia than Sunni? I mean at one point the European Christians sent knights to slay pagans, burnt heretics at stake, and was practically a theocratic confederacy of nations headed by the Pope, Yet they were able to transition into a "God is Love" Modus Operandi based on humanism and secularism despite their bloody past as religious fundamentalists.

Why is Islam (along with its older brother Judaism) having an extremely difficult time making the transition?
