I am a Roman Catholic. I have been interested in Islam (not converting, just interested in the religion.) Sunni Islam is the largest religious denomination in the world. But I have been interested in its structure and hierarchy and no one can answer my questions properly. Can anyone, PLEASE, take some time to explain to me and answer the questions I will ask. Please, explain it properly and simply, so that I understand.
So here are my questions.
- Who controls Sunni Islam? Who does your Imam report to? Is there like a top Imam or Mufti or whatever, to whom all Imams report to (like the Pope and Vatican)?
- If no one controls Sunni Islam, how can you know that the Imam in your mosque teaches the same thing as Imam in a different mosque? Who checks that Imams teach the same thing in all mosques (like Bishops check priests in Catholicism)?
- Is there separation between the clergy and the laity?
- Is every Imam free to interpret the Quran and the Sunnah as they wish? For example, if an Imam started preaching something wrong, is there some top Imam or place that would excommunicate him or anything? (Like Pope and Vatican)?
- Who controls the scholars? Who makes sure that all scholars agree with each other? Is there like a top Imam or top scholar who checks all Islamic scholars?
So, this is just the beginning, but I hope someone can explain, in a SIMPLE way and answer the questions I asked.
