Bismillah,
Ramadan is about a month away and those that are concerned about themselves will start to plan for it. Some are worried about their physique and so at some point will think of what they will do during Ramadan to stay in shape. Others will think of food and plan on things they would like to eat during Ramadan. There is a group of people though that are concerned about their spirituality and their plans are different.
They alter their diets so that the toll on their bodies will be minimal. They alter their sleep patterns realizing the reduced levels of sleep they will have to endure. They alter their recitation of Quran and increase the amount to make sure they can complete at minimum, one Quran during Ramadan. They alter their schedules and make sure they spend as much time as they can in the Masjid, and plan for Ihtikaaf if they can.
There is one thing that is extremely important that many overlook, is that they stop sinning and stay away from even small sins prior to Ramadan. When we sin, we are essentially negating the spiritual effects of the worship we do. We don't lose the goods deeds, we just don't experience the spiritual benefit that accompanies those goods deeds. It's the equivalent of eating food but not being satiated or gaining nutrients. Now that sin also coats and hardens the heart which takes times to reverse.
What Shaytan will do, is get the believer to sin even more in the days leading up to Ramadan. So that when Ramadan comes, that heart is on life support and through the month of Ramadan, any goods deeds will just revive the person. Therefore instead of excelling and truly getting close to Allah(swt), we walk out of Ramadan with nothing. The whole month went by and other than fasting, it felt no different to every other month. No spiritual progress at all.
So if you're truly interested in progressing and really care about your Ramadan, then you have to work on staying away from every sin, minor or major. Otherwise we'll see those people hugging each other out of happiness or shedding tears in dua and we just won't understand why with our eyes completely dry.
