So where does Islam stand when it comes to custody of children

Let’s say a Muslim couple divorced and they had a 16 year old son or daughter , I already know that the Hadith says "امك ثم امك ثم امك ثم ابوك" and also says that heaven is under the feet of mothers but in most cases especially in the Middle East and other Asian countries the father is the one that provides the family and has a job to provide for the family , what should the son do? And what are some obligations that who ever gets custody must provide
