I personally don't believe we were apes before, mostly because Darwin's theory was used around the late 19th century as a propaganda tool to support slavery (black people less evolved, hence white men were superior) so what's to say the same isn't happening today?
Besides that, iirc, Darwin also only mentions how the appearance of the species had changed throughout millions of years - not the species entirely. I find this more believable, in the sense that a species will adapt to it's environment and the changes will be visible in its appearance (i.e. a cow can be brown, black, strong or weak based on it's habitat but it won't become a horse).
So, how does Islam see it?
