Islam's ruling on killing rats/mice for lab work.

Hello brothers,

I am going to graduate soon and work in a lab. I am really concerned with what islam has to say about animal cruelty via animal testing. I will have to kill rats throughout my carrier and even torture them through testing chemicals on them. I feel so conflicted. Is this a sin?
