The following is from Wakīʻ ibn al-Jarrāḥ, Ṣaḥīḥ Kitāb al-Zuhd edited by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʻAbd al-Jabbār Furaywāʼī (Bayrūt: Muʼassasat Al-Kutub Al-Thaqāfīyah, 1993), and translated by the author of this website.

ʿAbd al-Wāḥid bin Amīn al-Makkī reported to us on the authority of his father on the authority of Jābir bin ʿAbd Allāh, who said: “While the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions were digging the trench [during the Battle of the Trench], the Prophet ﷺ, and the Muslims undertook an intense striving, then they sojourned for three days. They did not find any sustenance, until the Prophet ﷺ fastened stones to his stomach out of hunger.”

Fuḍayl bin Ghazwān al-Ḍubay on the authority of Abū Ḥāzim on the authority of Abū Hurayra, who said: “The family of Muhammad ﷺ, did not satiate their appetite from wheat, until Muhammad’s death.”

Ibn Abū Khālid reported to us on the authority of al-Shuʿbī, who said: ʿAlī said: “There was not with us except the skin of sheep, one side of which we would sleep upon, and the other Fāṭimah would [use for] work.”

Misʿar reported to us on the authority of Hilāl bin Humayd al-Wizān on the authority of ʿUrwa on the authority of ʿĀ’isha, who said: “The family of Muḥammad ﷺ did not satiate their appetite with food for two [consecutive] days, except that one of [those days they ate] a date.”

Qura bin Khālid al-Sadūsī reported to us on the authority of Ḥumayd bin Hilāl al-ʿAdawī on the authority of Khālid bin ʿAmīr, a man from them, who said: ʿUtba bin Ghazwān announced to us, he said: "I found myself with the Messenger of God ﷺ [...] there [was] not with us food except the leaves of palm fibers, [which we ate] until our mouths ulcerated.

al-Aʿmash reported to us on the authority of Abū Ṣāliḥ on the authority of some of the companions of the prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace: that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, was praying until his feet became swollen and it was said to him: “Why do you do this? For God had granted you pardon for the sins that you will commit and for the [sins] you have already committed.” [The Prophet] said: “Should I not be a thankful servant?”
