Asalamualaikum,

This is in no way to say there is anything wrong with living in a small home like them or to deny it. I'm genuinely curious.

According to Mufti Menk's story of the sahabi (that's singular for companion right?) Salman ibn farisi, may Allah be pleased with him.

Anyway, in the story he said when he, Salman RA, was the ameer, some people were going to build him a house so he asked (paraphrased) "what type of house are you building me?"

The Carpenter said "a house that will shade you from the sun, protect you from the cold, it will hit your head when you stand and hit your feet when you lay down"

To which Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, said "you know what house i prefer" or something similar to show he was happy with it.

Were the houses really that small?

Are people still willing to live like that today? I'm not asking about people that are forced by necessity. I might be a bit pessimistic but I'm expecting that if a guy got married and brought his wife to a home like that the marriage wouldn't last too long. Not saying it couldn't be that the wife wants it but the husband is against.
