I recently listened to a discussion forum where some people on the political left were beginning to question and challenge the philosophy of transgenderism. (Link to discussion). They talked about how this new gender identity ideology can cause more physical and psychological harm to people in the long term and how it is contradicting and working against the goals of feminism and women's liberation movement. If sex is construed to mean "gender identity", what that means is nearly all sex-segregated spaces - colleges, sports, dormitories - and women's rights in general would have no basis for existing. Likewise they realize that LGB would have to oppose the 'T' in LGBT in order to make consistent sense of their own views.
They also discuss how gender identity ideology is often presented dogmatically and how intolerant people on the left can be towards anyone who opposes or even questions this view.
In one instance, a lesbian feminist talked about how she was kicked out of the LGBTQ commission because she refused to recognize the gender identity of a male rapist who prefers to identify as a woman so he would be able to enter women's prison. They explain how you can't participate in the political sphere as a democrat today and publicly oppose transgenderism. To do so would be political suicide. You will be ostracized and labeled as a bigot and transphobe. There are many people, including many medical physicians today that realize the fallacy of transgenderism but can't speak out against it because it would cost them their job and career. I think this is an important point to consider, philosophical liberalism often presents itself as being tolerant and allowing maximum freedom for everyone, when in reality they can be just as authoritative and dogmatic as any religious group when they consider opposing views as harmful.
