When Mecca was under the control of the Ottoman Empire from 1229 to 1923, anyone who believed in a single creator was allowed to visit the city. This seems like a reasonable policy but it obviously changed when the current royal family was instated.
What I find to be egregious is that the Saudi royal family, with support from the British and the Americans, has hijacked the holiest site for the most popular religion in the world and made it completely inaccessible for so many people.
