It is narrated on the authority of Amir al-Mu'minin (Leader of the Believers), Abu Hafs 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), say:
"Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended. Whoever migrates with an intention for Allah and His messenger, the migration will be for the sake of Allah and his Messenger. And whoever migrates for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration will be for the sake of whatever he migrated for."
This hadith is considered to be the third of islam, this shows how important intentions are in islam. Our intentions must always be directed towards Allah (SWT) in everything we do because if we don't do that our actions will not benefit us in the hereafter. Allah do not accept actions with intentions that are not directed towards him. Like a person who gives to charity to be praised by people.
Allah (SWT) says “As for those who strive in Us, We shall surely guide them in Our ways.” and he also said (SWT): “I do not accept anyone except the one who is sincere to Me.”
Imam as-Sadiq (as) said: “Anyone who performs a small act for the sake of God, God will make it bigger than he wishes in the sight of others. And anyone who performs a great act for the sake of people, God will make it trivial in the sight of others.”
Imam Ali (ra) said: “Purify your work, knowledge, anger, acceptance, refusal, speech and silence for the sake of Allah.”
This means that, in every single thing we do, we must have the intention to please Allah or else we will lose the blessing of our good deeds. Do a good job for the sake of Allah, pray for the sake of Allah, be good to people for the sake of Allah, do not speak ill of those who hurt you for the sake of Allah and Allah shall grant us Jannah inshaa Allah.
This is a reminder for me and for people who read this. May Allah help us strive in his ibada and do everything in his sake. Amine.
