Why is marrying your first cousin allowed in Islam if genetics have proven that doing that is a risky thing to do?

I’m Muslim and I have trouble understanding this. From what I know, we are related to our first cousins by a few percent. There’s a chance that your child could have some sort of disease if you have intercourse with your cousin. Why isn’t this considered incest in Islam?
