Assalamu Alaykum

Alright, I've been researching this topic for the past few days, and am quite confused when it comes to the punishment for apostasy under the Islamic law in an idea Islamic state. I've come across many opinions that an apostate should be killed, however, I've come across other scholars such as Dr. Zakir Naik which say that the hadeeth about killing apostates has contextual importance, and isn't the standard punishment. He also supplied examples of the prophet (PBUH) pardoning apostates.

Now, all of this has really confused me. Is the punishment for apostasy death, or is it not? Is there certain terms to be met like many of the other Islamic laws, or not?

Jazzakum Allah khair.
