I came across this quote by Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad which really made me think about my own process of looking for guidance.
"We don't find the saints, the traditional thought is that they will find us. And they may have already found us. The conventional idea of the man with the snowy turban and the white beard and the twinkling eyes who reads your thoughts is just a romantic idea we have. Its just as likely to be the guy who's selling shwarama on the street corner who nobody pays any attention to, or the little toothless Bangladeshi who is always in the mosque. Allah is more likely to put His Great Secrets with those people, people that we don't really seem to notice, than with people who have the aura of religious respectability. Particularly in our age, when the most serious people tend not to do what I am doing, sitting up here and telling you how to behave, which is a ridiculous presumption. The real people are too humble to do something like that. "
