It is often said that in many Muslims homes, particularly in the Arab world there is a separate living room type room called a 'majlis' that is reserved to host and entertain guests while safeguarding the privacy of the family home. It is often spacious and perhaps the grandest room of the house in terms of decoration and furniture in order to make it comfortable for guests. It may also have its own entrance and washroom. Apparently in some instances, for guests who don't have an established relationship with the family its the only part of the house they would be in during their visit to maintain the intimacy and privacy of the main part of the home that the family lives in. Wealthier families make it totally separate from the main house while the less wealthy have a separate room usually next to the foyer in the main house.

Do any of you have a 'majlis' in your home and what is it like? Is it mainly an Arab thing or do non-Arab Muslims have it too?
