Question about Islam and “people of the book.”

Salam, I am an ex Christian turned atheist. I have spent years in the ME and Southwest Asia in the U.S. Army.

I have encountered many Muslims with a diversity of opinions. A big topic of discussion when I was a Christian was the concept of “people of the book.” On more than one occasion I was informed that Jews and Christians were “people of the book,” and therefore not the enemies of Muslims.

But here in the United States Muslims who live around me, and are frankly less interested in talking with me, hold the opinion that Jews and Christians who reject Islam are “kafir” and condemned.

I chalk this up to a difference between me being on duty and holding a authority versus being a fellow citizen and the conversation being held in equality.

Theologically what is the state of Jews and Christians according to Islam?
