I'm not a Muslim but I've always heard mixed opinions about Sufism.

One one hand, I've heard Sufism described as being the inner, mystical, esoteric movement of Islam. The best comparison being its akin to Kabbalah of Judaism.

On the other hand, I've heard Sufism criticized as some of their traditions and practices being in violation of certain Islamic principles of faith, at least by Salafi and those within certain Orthodox Islamic communities.

I was just curious if it could be better clarified or more clearly explained by someone better informed on the topic. What I know is secondhand knowledge at best.
