Hello all. Agnostic atheist here. Having gone to a Catholic school, I'm just about an expert on Christianity and can recite the Lords prayer from heart - a fantastically useful skill for someone who only ever enters churches to study the history on the walls. I have a number of friends of your faith, and it recently dawned on me that I don't know much about Islam, or too little for someone who likes to keep themselves informed as I should do.

I would like to disclaim that I take pride in my respect of other religions. This subreddit is fantastic for me - enabling me to learn what Islam means to individuals. In asking this question, I make no attempt to undermine or attack your beliefs, and sincerely hope I don't come across as though I do.

I read the Quran recently in order to better inform myself, and noticed a number of sections which directly permit the beating of women under certain circumstances. Furthermore, I have read previously some claims surrounding your Prophet (PBUH) of some rather nasty acts, such as paedophilia. I'm well aware this is common for all other religions, but moreso by the fact I haven't looked until now than anything else haven't found an explanation for these points. Again, I don't wish to come across disrespectful, I just feel this is the community of people to ask in order to get a friendly and informative response. If I'm wrong, please do correct me.

Reading things like this made me wonder: do you see these things as a defining truth and that is just how it should be, or is it open to interpretation? Thank you all very much.
