I've always avoided a credit card since becoming Muslim because I didn't actually need one and I wanted to avoid gray areas. I now want to build my credit and an important factor is having multiple types of loans. I currently have an Auto loan via an Islamic finance lender and would like to add a credit card in the mix. Here would be my plan: use it for emergencies and pay it off in full on the due date to avoid paying interest.
Here is my question: Can someone point me to a valid scholarly source, knowledgable in modern finance in the western world, that would know if such a use case would be considered halal? I'm also interested in the permissibility of such a setup vs a charge card (like AMEX) which to my understanding has a yearly fee and there is no interest involved.
