Metal Boots in the Snow

Byredo Metal Boots in the Snow 5 Colours Eyeshadow Palette ($70.00 for 0.28 oz.) is a new, limited edition murky, earth-toned color story for the holiday season. The pigmentation of all five shades lived up to the marketing–which was opaque for the regular eyeshadows as one shade was a glitter top coat–and were blendable with decent wear.

I found the eyeshadow formula to feel a little firmer in the pan than is typical in other mainstream eyeshadow formulas, but it didn’t end up being stiff or difficult to blend out but you may find you have to use a denser brush or a firmer pressure than you’re used to.

Frimas

Frimas has a transparent base chocked full of fine, silver micro-glitter. The formula had light tackiness to it, and the glitter had to be pressed into place as it didn’t spread/diffuse at all, so you’d have to pick up more to expand the initial placement. This was great for ensuring little fallout/migration during application and during eight-hour wear, though full disclosure, I did not wear it on my eyes as I am not comfortable with the particle size in this quantity near my eyes at this time.

Strap

Strap is a deep, muted olive green with a satiny sheen with faint flecks of gold micro-sparkle throughout. The texture was slightly firmer in the pan, but there was enough slip and adhesion that those finer sparkles translated well to the lid and didn’t result in immediate fallout. The eyeshadow had full color payoff that lasted well for eight hours before fading a bit.

Formula Overview

-

Byredo's eyeshadow formula is supposed to be "easy to blend," "long-lasting," and have "rich colour pay-off." They have a generally firmer feel than most eyeshadows have on the market, so using a firmer, moderately dense brush and moderate pressure are necessary to pick up product evenly when using a brush. The brand does indicate that they're "especially" blendable when using fingertips, though the narrow pans may not suit everyone's fingertips. I did not find using fingertips was necessary to achieve coverage or blendability overall.

Some of the brand's eyeshadow palettes include a glittery "top-coat," and these have a transparent base chocked full of fine glitter particles (which, by the ingredient list, appear to be Bio-glitter rather than plastic, or PET, glitter, but there's no callout about it when it seems like it would be a selling feature). The texture of these top coats is lightly tacky, and they work best with a fingertip and then patted exactly where one wants, as they don't really spread out at all.

The eyeshadows were typically pigmented, smooth to the touch, and blendable, with some of the low-sheen shades "melting" on the lid a bit for a very seamless finish. They wore around eight hours before fading visibly.

Boucle

Boucle is a deep, blackened blue with subtle, cool undertones (a “warmer” blue, if you will) paired with a pearly sheen. It had opaque color coverage that adhered well to bare skin and blended out well, but the texture was slightly firmer than is typical of shimmer eyeshadows (at this point) so it needed a slightly heavier handed approach to pick up product evenly–not too difficult or anything, and no impact to blendability. It wore well for eight hours before fading visibly on me.

Ground Frost

Ground Frost is a medium, olive green with a warmer, reddish base and lighter, truer olive green pearl with faint micro-sparkle. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which adhered well to bare skin with a smooth, even laydown of color that diffused nicely along the edges. The texture was soft, smooth, and lightly creamy without being too firmly-pressed into the pan. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Verglas

Verglas is an ultra-light, silvery taupe with neutral-to-cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The consistency was soft, smooth, and blendable with a lightly creamy feel that was was a touch thicker and less-firmly pressed in the pan compared to the other shimmery shades in the palette. It had rich color payoff that lasted well for eight hours before showing signs of fading.
