Celestial Odyssey

Pat McGrath Celestial Odyssey Mega MTHRSHP Eyeshadow PalettePat McGrath Celestial Odyssey Mega MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($78.00 for 0.684 oz.) is a new, limited edition eyeshadow palette for the holiday season. There are 18 shades–four matte eyeshadows and 14 shimmer eyeshadows–that include a few previously-released shades but the majority are new shades. The eyeshadows were pigmented, blendable, and easy to work with and had minimal fallout with nine to 10-hour wear. It felt like the quality I’d expect from the brand with very little to complain about.

If the color story is up your alley, it’s a fantastic deal for Pat McGrath’s eyeshadow formula!

Saturn Sunset

Saturn Sunset is a medium, reddish-plum with a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation with a soft, somewhat powdery texture, though it was blendable and easier to work. I’d recommend using a lighter-hand and building up to avoid light fallout otherwise. This shade lasted well for nine hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview

$25.00/0.04 oz. - $625.00 Per Ounce

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.

The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Rose Venus

Rose Venus is a medium copper with warm, more orange undertones and a metallic finish. The consistency was incredibly smooth, almost cream-like as it was finely-milled, not at all powdery but still readily picked up with a dry brush. It was richly pigmented and stayed on well for nine and a half hours before fading a bit.

This shade was previously released as an eyeshadow single.

Gold Galaxy

Gold Galaxy is a deeper, yellowy gold with subtle, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer, which adhered evenly to bare skin without fallout. The texture was moderately dense, more loosely-pressed compared to most of the brand’s metallics but not messy to use. It stayed on well for nine hours before fading slightly.

Noir Moon

Noir Moon is a rich, inky black base with multi-colored pearl throughout–predominantly teal, emerald green, and violet. The consistency was incredibly smooth and almost cream-like, which helped the eyeshadow adhere well to bare skin and retain all that pretty shimmer and not just dissipate when blended. It had opaque color payoff that lasted well for nine hours before showing signs of fading.

Bronze Nova

Bronze Nova is a light, golden bronze with strong, warm undertones and fine flecks of pink and gold micro-sparkle over a metallic finish. It had opaque pigmentation paired with a cream-like texture that looked chunkier in the pan than it turned out to be in practice, as it really smoothed out when applied to bare skin. It wore nicely for nine hours before fading noticeably.

Nirvana

Nirvana is a deep blue-teal with cool undertones and a smooth, metallic sheen. The eyeshadow had rich pigmentation where a little went a long way. The consistency was moderately dense, creamy, and smooth to the touch without being too firmly-pressed into the pan. It showed signs of fading after nine hours of wear.

Corrupt Copper

Corrupt Copper is a rich, molten copper with strong, warm orange undertones and a pearl-like sheen. It had opaque color payoff paired with a smooth, moderately dense consistency that was slightly firm but not difficult to pick up–just needed a firmer hand than some other shades, relatively. It lasted nicely for nine and a half hours before fading a bit.

This shade was previously released as an eyeshadow single.

Palladium

Palladium is a darker, pewter gold with strong, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It’s a dirtier gold, which is less “gold” traditionally because it lacks that really yellow/orange warmth of most golds. The texture was moderately dense, smooth, and blendable without being overly thick. It had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and stayed on well for nine hours before fading visibly.

Citrine Envy

Citrine Envy is a bright, medium grass green with lighter, warmer gold sparkle over a shiny, metallic finish. It had a chunkier consistency compared to most shades in the palette, so there was light fallout when working with it dry. It had opaque color coverage with a lightly emollient texture, which helped the product apply evenly and refrain from having additional fallout during the nine hours it wore for.
