Italian is one of the more popular European languages. It’s a Romance language and it’s the official language of Italy, Switzerland, San Marino, the Vatican City, and a few other places. Travelers and vacationers probably don’t need to learn the whole language to enjoy a trip there. However, a good phrasebook or multilingual dictionary certainly makes the experience easier. You don’t have to buy paperback versions anymore. Your mobile phone can do it for you. Here are the best English to Italian dictionaries and phrasebooks for Android! Dictionary Linguee is an excellent multilingual dictionary app. It supports over four dozen languages in total and that includes Italian. The app also features offline support, translations across any two supported languages, suggestions, quick searches, example sentences (for context), and audio pronunciations. It's difficult to find another app that does what this one does as well as this one does it. Plus, it's entirely free as far as we can tell and it has a web version. What's not to like?
Google Translate is about as good as it gets for English to Italian dictionaries. It can translate over 100 language online and over 50 languages offline (typing only). The app also includes a camera function. It translates things like signs, menus, and other written stuff. There is even a two-way conversation translator in case things get too hairy. The app also includes phrasebook functionality and basic definitions. This is the one we recommend first with Dictionary Linguee in a close second. Yeah, it's that good.
Italian-English Dictionary is a fairly standard dictionary app. It translates between Italian and English (and vice versa) only. Thus, this might be a good option if you don't need all that extra stuff in Dictionary Linguee or Google Translate. This one features audio pronunciations, Material Design, a bookmark system for saving favorite words (in categories), and even some word games for practice. It's simple, but it's effective and it works fine. The premium version is also relatively cheap at $2.85.
Reverso Translation Dictionary is another decent multilingual dictionary. It does the basics, including translations, definitions, and audio pronunciations. Some other features also include about a dozen languages, offline support, a search history, and more. You get a few extra features if you register for an account. Dictionary Linguee and Google Translate are better options in terms of features and design. However, this still works quite well if those other ones simply don't.
Simply Learn Italian is an excellent Italian phrasebook. The free version features over 300 common phrases and words. You also get audio pronunciations, variable audio speed, and various quizzes and and exercises for practice. The premium version adds more phrases and more features. It's a solid app for what it does. Even the design is colorful and modern. This is also a good app in case you want to start learning the language for real. It pairs well with other language learning apps. It should get you by as a phrasebook. However, the premium version is the one you want.
Most Italian learning apps have all the tools you need for travel. That includes multilingual dictionaries, phrasebooks, audio pronunciations, and various exercises for memorization. They also include a bunch of other stuff because you're learning the language instead of just referencing it a few times during your vacation. These apps are generally more expensive, but come with vastly more features, functions, and content. If you plan on traveling to Italy often, learning the language may be in your best interests.
